1) To kickstart, could you share about your current role, what the company does and a bit about your career background?

Thank you for your time as well! I currently work at Dropee; it is a B2B e-commerce platform based in Malaysia, that allows businesses to buy and sell online on the Dropee platform. We have also grown our services over the past 2 years, providing a platform or marketplace, so that businesses can have their own marketplace as well!

Dropee is the first company I've been with since I graduated from university. I started as a Sales & Marketing Intern back in 2018, where Dropee was about a year old. After 3 months of internship, I joined them as a full-time employee as Customer Happiness Officer. This role basically is to keep the customers happy and satisfied with their purchasing journey with Dropee and also the products they receive. But it does not end there… because when you work in a startup company, you have to do more with less! Aside from my immediate role as customer service, I also had to jump into Business Development, Marketing and Finance. As one of the first full-time employees in Dropee, I was lucky enough to have the chance to work closely with the founders and head of the departments to build our SOPs in place. I was in this role for about 2 years.

Moving forward in the year of 2020 I was promoted to Fulfilment Executive, currently in this role, for 2 years now. What I basically do is to liaise with sellers to process the orders and work together with our third party logistic partners to make sure that our buyers receive their orders in a timely manner and in good condition. Besides, I’m also working closely with our Business Development team on how we can provide the best service for our sellers to sell our platform.

2) Can you describe what your typical workday looks like?

Never ending problem solving! Think, think, think!

There is no clear cut answer when you deal with humans. It’s a very case to case basis. A lot of factors will affect the delivery of the orders, one day the traffic is bad that your order couldn’t be delivered on the promised date, one day the item you ordered was broken due to the mishandling of the products, and many more… As a fulfillment executive we troubleshoot problems daily and have to think of creative ways to solve each problem, providing both short and long term solutions. I personally enjoy it because we face different challenges to overcome everyday, and in that sense my work is ever interesting.

On a good day where there are no issues or problems to solve, I will go through our SOPs and platform to see where we can improve to serve our customers better. Dropee is a customer centric platform, so we seek to provide the best service for our customers.

3) What does personal growth mean to you?

We learn new things everyday- this too is personal growth in my opinion. You gain more experience, knowledge, and skill. Absorb like a sponge!

To me, it is important to experience personal growth from time to time, it helps to increase your market value.

4) Is there a habit you consciously exercise to ensure you achieve your ideal personal growth?

I like to scroll on social media! Not gonna lie, I spent a lot of time there. Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn to look for tips and hacks on how to improve ourselves, personally and professionally. It gives me the motivation to do better.

5) What does it mean to grow in your career? How do you measure your career growth?

I think for me to grow my career means to be better than everyone else who does the same job as I do.

I measure my career growth by the title I have, responsibilities given and the amount of money I get paid to perform the job. This shows how much the company appreciates and values me. But again, I need to be reasonable with this. If I think that I deserve a promotion or increment, reason with it, how much I contribute to the growth of the company I’m working for.

6) Aside from your full-time job, is there anything else you like to do outside work?

I like to get together with my family and friends to catch up on life, work and everything over food and drinks.

I’ve been into video editing too, lately. Not a pro, just doing it for fun to keep my creative mind running.

7) Are there any books, podcasts or apps that have been helpful for your growth?

For motivation I like to watch movies or series about successful people to motivate myself. I enjoy reading and watching Girlboss.

For self-development I enjoy listening to and reading Simon Sinek’s Start With Why.

8) Any tips you’d like to share for those who are looking to venture into similar roles?

Go on LinkedIn and read people’s posts! It’s a real-life situation and you can learn from others solutions and mistakes, see if you like what they do… If you do, don’t be shy to reach out to them! On LinkedIn, most people are open to interacting and expanding their network.

To fresh graduates out there looking for jobs, please give startup companies a try! It may not sound as fancy as the big companies out there, but it sure is a fulfilling journey.

9) Finally, what is the one quote you always live by?

"Never stop learning, because life never stops teaching"

Everyday you will hear and see new things and people are constantly inventing new things. Therefore, no matter how old you are, as long as you are alive, you will never stop learning.
